Volcanic ash is essentially ground glass, the exploded walls of bubbles, due to expanding gas in the magma that is being frothed. So, don't brush the ash off your car, don't use the wipers, change the air filter and oil filter often, as Mike suggested, don't yield to the temptation to write you name in the ash on the back window - ask me how I know; I was also in Missoula during the Mt. St. Helen's eruption, and for years you could see "May 18th, 1980" as a ghost image on the back window of my chevy. Just use plenty of water! The speed limit in Missoula at the time was 25 mph on interstate 90. We had plenty of beer...
