There are several types of codes in medicine and medical billing. While you may have some in-house codes for procedures, most companies use the CPT codes. They are owned by the AMA and are produced in conjunction with CMS (Medicare).
A CPT code is 5 digits long--all numbers. I don't know of a free online repository but if you google "cpt xxxxx" you will likely find a definition out there.
ICD-9 codes are used to indicate the condition or diagnoses. In effect, the reason for a visit or procedure. These are up to 5 digits long. They usually are all numeric but some have letters like "e" or "v" in front of them. They also have a decimal after the third position but frequently they leave that off. These codes are free to download from CMS. A hard one to find for the whole file but if you google "icd " you will find some free databases.
There are also HCPCS which tend to refer to medicines and some procedures. Try a google . . . .
Or if you don't mind the loss of privacy, I would be happy to give you a definition.
