I have thought about the same issues, but it sounds like you're out in challenging conditions more than I. LSD is going to be clearly better than traction control. It was mentioned that with traction control, when the slippery wheel slips, braking is applied to that wheel, and power given to the opposite wheel. What it feels like to me is just an abrupt drop-off in power, not any improvement in traction.
I would avoid SUV's unless you like the idea of rolling over. Probably an A4 or equivalent Passat with 4 Motion would be the answer. The new Saab XWD sounds interesting, but I agree that its fuel economy is abysmal. What is Saab thinking?
If you wanted to stay with Saab, however, perhaps for safety reasons, then Quaife LSD's are available for the 9000 and 9-5. I don't know about the 9-3SS.
