Audis, and from what I hear other German cars in general, are tough on brakes. Our other car is an A4 Quattro V6 Manual, and my experience is that front brakes last about 30,000 miles, rears about 50 - 60,000 miles. My SAAB 9000 gets many more miles out of a set of brakes (maybe it's the primary driver!), but the SAAB is not as heavy and the brakes are not as good (in my opinion), or at least not as power-assisted as those in the Audi.

You can buy excellent aftermarket brake parts at the prices that Eric quoted, i.e. Brembo rotors and Mintex pads are what I used last time. The front rotors are priced similar to those for a SAAB, about $42 each if you get them mailorder, about $85 each list. Note that most shops charge list price for the parts that they use for their work; you may want to ask the shop if they would do the work with your parts - some will, many will not (my favorite analogy at a shop that won't: "you wouldn't bring a steak to a restaurant, would you?").

I would be VERY suspicious about the quoted work where only the rear rotors are going to be replaced. The A4 rotors are a fairly soft metal and start with barely enough extra metal to cover the "minimum thickness" spec; with use, the soft metal wears away, leaving a large ridge on the edge of the rotor, and the middle of the rotor winds up under the minimum spec. I have had to replace the front rotors with EVERY change of front brake pads, and would not be suprised if you got a phone call: "after we took the brakes apart we discovered that your car needs front rotors as well, which will be $200 more if you want us to do this work".
