Yes, $1800 is a lot, but I was expecting more like $3k for something like that. And with that $1800 you get lots of stuff, standard. It's not like Dell where they say they start from $699 but have to go all the way up to $1100 to get anything worth getting.
I was a little concerned about the lack of the optical drive too, but if you've got an extra hour check out Steve Jobs' keynote. He pointed out that people only use the optical drive for watching DVDs, loading software, burning music CDs, and one other thing I forget. But he introduced in the keynote the ability to rent movies through iTunes, so there goes your DVD problem. People don't burn CDs anymore, they use an iPod. And he introduced "Remote Disc." If you're on a network with any other computer, even a PC, you can ask permission to use that computer's CD drive. Just hit accept on the other computer and you can install all your applications wirelessly. Otherwise they have a USB superdrive available for $99. To be honest, I don't know when the last time was that I opened the CD drawer on my laptop.
