Well, I was up there almost two weeks ago, and the weather had not been kind to the snow. I think I hit Bolton on Monday the 14th, which was the day the coastal storm hit. The week before, there was some very warm weather followed by rain followed by a deep freeze. Any remaining natural snow was a rock-hard crust.
I would call the conditions that day "old-school east coast" skiing. You pretty much had to stick to the groomed terrain. All of the steep trails were closed, and forget about the woods. A few inches of snowfall that afternoon quieted things down a bit, but wasn't enough to let you forget about the hardpack below. By that Friday, there had been a second snowfall, and the conditions at Stowe were much better than anyplace else had been earlier in the week. I finally managed to get a good dose of tree skiing.
I'm sure the snow is better now, and Bolton is definitely a perfect place to get your feet under you if your skills are a bit rusty. I think the lift ticket was around thirty bucks, and on a weekday I had the place to myself.
