I agree that there's something more to it than can easily be figured out. A year ago in January my C900 I'd had since 1989 developed drivability problems and would bear no futher repair. I opted to use an offered Daewoo for the rest of the winter and look for a replacement Saab in the spring. When I picked up the Daewoo from my brother I asked him how it handled the ice...I was skeptical...he said "surprisingly well - better then my car", better than his Volvo C70 coupe! I never got the Daewoo stuck, had any scary glare ice moments, and it ended up snowing quite a bit towards the end of last winter. The Daewoo had skinny, no name all season tires. The Daewoo got the lightweight with most weight over the engine on skinny tires equation perfectly - better then a '70s VW Rabbit.
In May I bought a nice '98 900SE convertible (I've never seen a purpose for car payments), which is handling the winter with style and grace on 15" narrow studded hakkapeliitta 10's...and noticeably better than my brother's C70 which is on 16" normal width studded michelins.
