at age 55, will a company promote, or will they say "younger"? Will they take the experience or go for the youth? Is there really an age bracket that is "over the hill"? Based on my experience in the past, my conclusion is: A smaller (less than 100 employees) company wouldn't mind someone older...the larger (1200 employees) will go for youngsters, based on the size of the Hiring "pool". Any HR people care to comment?
I have been observing changes at work. also, have been offered a lateral, at a decrease in pay. (not really.. it is $2433 more per year, hourly. I would just lose all of my overtime, and per diem $7950.) The advantage? 4 day work weeks. Disadvantage, lose $150 per week overall at a minimum. I could promote from this position, but it is up only. If I stay put, I can still transfer between other divisions for variety, and equal pay.
The company is in labor contract negotiations.
Am I over-thinking this? Other than the 4 day work week, the only advantage I see is the "promotion factor". {FI} unit of 20, 9 have moved up. Other units look like this: {B} unit 559, 4 promoted, (TO) unit of 70, (my current location,) 3 promotions.
If I stay, my seniority holds, moving only allows me to keep my vacations.
Sorry for the long trip down the bunny trail. I keep thinking I am missing something in my thought process. Anyone have a matrix for this kind of problem? The earliest I can retire is in 40 months, or stay for 8 more years, and go out with 30%.
