Kennebunkport to Bar Harbor is about 180 miles. Expect a good four hours.
Where to go?
Portland. It is in Maine, but it's not like most of Maine. Fun town. 2 hours to 10 days.
Head north on 95 to Yarmouth/Freeport. Stop off at the DeLorme headquarters in Yarmouth - right off the highway. They've got their map store, and Eartha - the world's largest globe. Hokey? Not really - 42 feet in diameter. See http://www.delorme.com/about/eartha.aspx. a half-hour side trip at most, but cool.
Just up the road in Freeport is LL Bean's main store(s). Open 24 hours. When my wife and I go up, we stay in a hotel in the area, and then go shopping after midnight when the crowds are gone. The staff is a lot calmer and a lot more fun. At least a couple of hours. Don't forget to check out the LL Bean Outlet. Lots of other outlets in Freeport, but I love LL.
For lunch, we grab a sandwich and go to Wolfe's Neck State Park. (http://portlandme.about.com/cs/parkspubliclands/a/WolfesNeckWoods.htm). Great camping and hiking, or just walk down to the water and picnic. There is a fee, but worth the price.
You can stay on 95 to Bangor, then go down to Bar Harbor from there. That's the fastest way. Taking the shore route is shorter but slower, and very pretty. Check out Camden on the way.
