Re: upgrade to Osram Silverstars Posted by PGAero [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: upgrade to Osram Silverstars, DivrDon ![]() |
DivrDon,
Osram Silverstars are not DOT approved and are an E-code light. They are not coated with amethyst and therefore don't have the blue/white hue. Sylvania Silverstars are DOT approved and do have the amethyst coating.
Others,
In my experience, the Sylvania Silverstars are noticeably brighter than a Sylvania (or any other brand) standard bulb. The higher color temperature seems to make color definition more natural, which might make them "seem" brighter than they really are. Even if lumen rating is the same as other lights but color definition and contrast is improved, then it seems like a better bulb, IMHO. So, while Daniel Stern's take is valid, I find that Sylvania Silverstars are an improvement. (After all, Sylvania can't legally publish any lumen output data that exceeds the DOT standard. Maybe there's data out there from independent labs that actually list real outputs?)
I've driven behind both Osram and Sylvania Silverstars. I think that both are better than "standard" bulbs. I tried a different company's blue/white "special" bulb and didn't even use it for more than 30 seconds. (I wish I remembered what brand it was.) It was significantly worse than any bulb I've driven behind. The purpose of that bulb was to make the headlights look different, at the expense of making them function worse. In that sense, I agree with Daniel Stern.
To the original post, My Silverstars do not last as long as standard bulbs, but I find that the improvement is worth it. Mine do, however, last longer than the original poster has experienced.
Cheers, and keep the headlights pointed in the direction you're moving,
Peter
