No Typo... when I was reading the article, there was an ad for the VW Passat, starting at GBP 16,000..... and, in Europe, the base Passat engine is a 1.6 or 1.8 non turbo 4 cylinder.
Also, in the UK, SAABs are priced relatively higher compared to other makes than they are here. The 9-5 Aero has a list price comparable to some Mercedes E-class models (again, there will be European E-class engines smaller than the E350 we get here as the base, there's probably an E250 or something. Either way, we don't have it all that bad here... though of course the weak dollar makes those European prices seem even higher to us. What it really means is European makers are making very little profit here at present. Another thing is the rate of depreciation, percentage wise, is a bit slower in Europe and the dealer margin on used cars has traditionally been narrower - you could trade a for a new car every 3 years without having to be certifiably insane.
