I've done lots of my own maintenance over the past 38 years and learned a lot by trial and error. I'm a pretty decent wrench but still make mistakes. As does my very trusted indy, whom I have do jobs I don't have time, energy, tools, skill or inclination to do myself.
Stuff is gonna go south sometimes for no readily apparent reason when other repairs are done. Nature of life and entropy, I guess. Or just someone being asleep at the switch. Which, after engine and suspension rebuilds, valve jobs, and dozens of other repairs, I can understand.
There's no way to avoid stuff going south on you. Try to do more stuff on your own, use a really trusted indy (never a dealer) and understand that random stuff happens, that mechanics, like most other people, lie to protect themselves or cover stuff they couldn't foresee.
At the end of the day, life goes on. But the best solution is never take a car you care about to a dealer, and develop a good relationship with your indy. Mine is someone I'd have over to the house for a cookout. The relationship is very important, IMHO.
