Every one of us in my work group has been "displaced" to our current work location due to corporate restructuring, and all of us have a nearly 100 mile/day commute - but from different origins.
My 2000 9-5 achieves (or it used to) 35mpg in steady state expressway driving, and 30 mpg on my daily commute.
A co-worker drives aan Impala SS with the "Displacement On Demand" V8 which also achieves mid 30's on the expressway, but his commute mileage is less than mine due to the V8's thirst at stoplights. He states closer to 25MPG on his daily commute.
A third co-worker drives a Solstice which he bought for the advertised economy, and he gets the worst mileage of any of us!
With gas just hitting $4/gallon here in Michigan, all of us would like to drive a more fuel efficient vehicle, but what? A Chevy Aveo is only rated at 35MPG on the highway, the same mileage two of us are getting now!
An Aveo versus a 9-5? An Aveo versus an Impala SS? Both are no brainers in my mind.
