Re: Fox was Brazilian Posted by Bill Homer [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Fox was Brazilian, Mike Lynch ![]() |
Besides a SportWagon (called the Parati in Brazil), VW also made the Voyage in a hatchback version called the Gol that was not imported in the US and possibly the biggest seller in Brazil. The North-South engine configuration was important, as you could buy a Gol with a normal VW boxer air-cooled engine in it, the cheapest of the cheap. Things we take for granted here were cost-reduced in Brazil, i.e. my friend's Voyage had no heater circuit; the levers operated the vents, but there was no temperature adjustment (what do you need heat for in most of Brazil?). A/C - what's that? Of course that car could run on alcohol 15 years ago.......
I wish VW a lot of luck taking on the Camry, Accord, Altima, Legacy, Malibu, G6, Taurus, etc. that make up this crowded market segment. Their current level of reliability will not cut it (I also have an Audi, so I speak from experience), cutting features will not cut it, cost savings will not cut it - they need to go the other way and add luxury and panache to differentiate themselves from the competition.
