The key to deciding is to determine how long you can drive for how much. Driving costs money and you can either make repairs or make payments, there's no free lunch. Those of us who drive older Saabs generally figure on paying between $500 to $1500 (at worst) a year, which is a relative bargain compared to the $2-3K you'd have to make in payments (plus routine maintenance). In the case of your car, since the engine is good, assuming the transmission isn't on it's last legs, it sounds as though you could get another year out of it for $400-$500, maybe less. That's the bargain of the century compared to anything else. Since this car is worth next to nothing, I'd drive it until something expensive goes. Do as little as possible, keep it togather with duct tape, baling wire, stop leak, junk yard parts and prayer. If it lasts long enough to scrap togather $4or5K you can get something much nicer than the $2,500 you have now. Saabs are reknowned for their ability to soldier on with all kinds of things wrong--put her to work.
