If a car has drum rear brakes, ABS is a good idea. Mixing front discs with rear drum brakes is like apples and oranges. No matter what they do to balance the brakes, the braking charactoristics of front discs and rear drums are different.
The pre ABS Saab 4 wheel disc brakes were well balanced with little inclination for the rear to swing out. Actually fun to slide them in on ice and snow. With ABS, the Saab brakes do not seem to stop that well, ice, wet, or dry. At best, if the ABS activates, its an indication you are driving to fast for conditions.
A relative who worked for Ford a number of years ago is adamat that ABS causes longer stopping distances. It seems the ABS system waits too long for the tire to get rolling again. Skid marks these days are a series if short scuff marks several feet apart. The arugument for ABS is a sliding tire has poorer coeffient if friction than a tire at someting less than 14% slip. The problem is, the pulsing action of ABS causes the tire, wheel, brake assemblies to change speed rapidly, which takes away from maintaining a constant slip rate.
A study performed when ABS first came out, indicated ABS had little effect on the total number of accidents, ABS did increased the number of off road shunts by 40%. Apparently some people have steering issues when braking heavily.
