Our 40 gallon gas water heater failed on a Sunday morning, large puddle of water leaking from a corroded tank.
I called one of those "24/7 Plumbing ourfits" that installed a 50 gallon high recovery rate water heater. I believe it cost me around $400 total and they were finished before noon.
Job was foolishly simple and I was embarrassed I even hired someone else to do the work, especially since I did almost half of it anyway! If you do it yourself don't forget a garden hose to drain the old heater and an appliance truck to move the old and new heaters into/out of the house. New di-electric fittings for the water lines, plan on a new shut-off valve for the water, and "maybe" some random pipe nipples to connect the gas line. I was surprised to learn the valve height above finished floor is almost a standard dimension! The part of the job that had me the most concerned, multiple trips to a hardware store for proper gas pipe pieces, did not exist!
