Cars in general are a lot safer than they were in 1991, and even without airbags they have stiffer, stronger structures.

I've seen the Swedish Folksam ratings from real accident data, posted here some weeks ago, that show how older Saabs do compared to many newer cars and they mostly do well, but for the most part the newer cars hold up at least as well in crashes.

The number of cars that get 4 or 5 star ratings is pretty impressive, but I don't always trust the numbers, because they only measure accidents with cars in the same size class. Real accidents have more variables and the car that hits you might be a lot bigger than the one you're in. That's one of the reasons I like having my eldest kid driving around in a '95 9000, because the size of the car is part of the protection it offers.
