I'd guess you'd need a 20" frame, maybe 19.5". I'm also 6'2", but I have long legs and ride a 20.5" frame MTB and a 61cm road bike.

The problem with "the list of craig" is that only 1% of sellers list the frame size, or even know how to measure a frame correctly. You'll probably do a lot of driving around before finding a bike that fits. Most cities have a local riding club or MTB advocacy group (triangleMTB here in Raleigh) who have classified sections with sellers who KNOW bikes. Also, MTBreview is a national/international MTB website with classified and bike reviews.

I'd recommend a known brand (Specialized, Cannondale, Giant, Trek, etc. as Chadwick said) and stay away from anything that can be found in a big-box store. Stay away from anything listed as high tensile steel - it's crap.

As your first bike, I'd recommend a butted cromoly steel frame or mid-level aluminum frame. Front suspension only (hardtail), or go with a cromoly steel rigid fork which has *some* give to it. Don't even think about disk brakes in this price range - it's overkill for the riding you want to do and will only siphon money away from the frame and other components.

A used bike is typically 1/2 to 1/3 of the price of a new bike, even if it's just 2 years old, so used is a good deal if you can find the bike you want without the aid of a bike shop. However, do check out reputable shops to get an idea of what size frames will fit you and what a properly fit bike feels like. You never know - they may give you a great deal on last years bikes! Find friends and coworkers who are MTBers - they'll know which bike shops will give you the real skinny.

Lastly - factor in the cost of a proper mini tool kit, patch kit, pump, and helmet. And a pair of riding shorts too.

Best of luck
BTW - I'm on MTB 5, 6, and 7 right now, been riding for 14 years.
