You know, I lived in eastern Washington/Northen Idaho, then in Bozeman Montana and I drove my 9000 Aero around (with three pedals, thank you very much) with dedicated snows and I never had a problem getting where I needed to go. (I even put plenty of time in on my summer tires on snowy roads and never had any mis-haps). All in all, I agree with you about FWD and driving in the snow.
Now, I'll also admit that there are places an AWD car will go that a FWD car can't. Steep snow-covered hills, loose gravel, etc. And, a Subaru Outback or Audi AllRoad will absolutely put the Saab, FWD VWs or BMWs to shame on rocky roads that might end up cracking the oil pan in those other cars.
So, not everyone looking to buy a wagon only needs the extra space.
Oh, and here in the great state of CA, during storms you get turned around at the snow-line in your 2WD wagon unless you have chains on it. Whether it makes sense or not, it's the law out here. (While I don't agree with it, the fact that most Californians live in places that never get ANY snow but who live only miles from places with more snow most of the rest of the nation make for some less-than-ideal traveling scenarios.)
Okay, now to my selections:
Audi AllRoad.
BMW 3 or 5.
And make sure there's a map pocket in those somewhere so that I can install my navigation system from another car without compatibility issues ;o)
