Mustang, Smushtang!

I have a 1996 Saab 9000 that can run on 1, 2, 3 or 4 cylinders depending on which switches I flip on the dash. Once I get up to highway speed, I turn off all but one and I get 159 mpg. I installed a 100 pound flywheel so it coasts well with my foot off the gas and I lightened the whole body up by acid dipping it to shave off 200 pounds of heavy swedish steel. The body flexes a lot now but I don't mind. I don't get into accidents, so I just have the bumper covers on balsa wood frames and took those heavy side beams out of the doors. Yanked the airbags, too.

I'm running narrow Bonneville salt flats high speed tires inflated to 125 pounds. They aren't so good in the rain, but it doesn't matter because I don't drive in the rain since I pulled the wipers off to cut wind resistance. Also pulled the outside side mirrors. I replaced all the glass with 1/8" plexiglass and took out all the carpeting and insulation. That stuff's heavy--saved 120 pounds. Yanked the A/C system, too.

My car now weighs only 2200 pounds but I think I can trim another 600 if I make molds of the doors and make new ones of fiberglass. Just decided to take out the power window units and am gonna do a retro thing and have the plexiglas windows bolt into place like they did on old race cars in the '50s. It will be so cool!

The seats in Saabs weigh a ton, so I'm getting some 25 pound racing seats. Might use the Saab ones in the family room.

This will get the ole 9K down to about 1800 pounds and change. I think it will get my mileage up to about 177 on the highway. It's great for speed, too. I can do 0-100 in just 8 seconds, and the car tops out at 174 in 8th gear. Not bad for only 376 horsepower.

Around town I get 68 mpg if I just run on one cylinder and don't mind everyone giving me the one finger salute when they pass me.

Sure is fun what you can do if you get a little creative and lose some weight.

I'll report back once I get the cold fusion system running.
