I agree that free service does motivate the lessee to bring the car in - if it's a pleasant experience. My Audi came with free service for scheduled maintenance items (note that some items such as antifreeze that were not scheduled and therefore not included) for three years, I think that they bumped it up to four now. The dealer's waiting room has espresso machines, snacks, beautiful modern lounge chairs, HDTV, magazines, etc. This experience serves them well for several reasons:
1. BMW, their main competitor, also offers free maintenance. When comparing total cost of the lease between brands, maintenance gets subtracted out.
2. If a large percentage of the manufacturers' cars are leased, you need to motivate the lessee to bring it back for service so you can resell the lease returns easier.
3. It brings people into the dealership who are not necessarily looking to replace their car now, but will be in the market soon; a nice experience and the shiny, pretty new products make a good impression and can make it easier to lease/buy the next one from the same dealer.
I do not believe that VW has the same program; their target audience is different than Audi (despite the similarities under the skin), perhaps a smaller percentage of leases?
