Volvo for instance is pushing and closing the envelope in making the cars so high tech that smaller independent shops will have big problems keeping up paying for the technology to repair them.
Many high end cars are so full of tech stuff that without proprietary scantools and software it is almost impossible to find and repair certain problems.
When the problem is a bug in the software of whatever module, how can you repair it with only a wrench and Volt/Ohm meter at hand.
Without the latest factory scan tools and access to latest software updates, BMW mechanics after what I hear, are more or less left in the dust repairing 21th century cars.
So the general mechanic is slowly going to disappear and will be replaced by specialty shops that repair one or two brands.
