I was pulling onto the expressway this afternoon when an unusual motorhome in the centerlane passed by. This vehicle was set low to the ground, not overly long, and fairly narrow. It took me a while to catch up with it to look at it again. It had Ontario plates reading "VXEN 21", the engine is located in the rear, the leftside badge on the motor cover read "turbo diesel", and although it was obstructed by a ladder to the roof making it difficult to read, the rightside rear cover badge read "VIXEN 21".

I thought maybe this was a Canadian built RV until I did a little research on the web. The vehicle I saw was built here in Detroit for only 3 or 4 years in the late 1980's. The designer's goal was to create a garageable motorhome that could achieve 30MPG. The early units were diesel pushers using a BMW turbo-diesel, and got 28MPG on the highway. They switched to a GM's 3800 V6 gas engine at the end (probably for cost reasons) that unfortunately had much worse fuel economy. Coefficient of drag was stated at 0.29, lower than some sports cars of its day.

Too bad this company went out of business, they appeared to be ahead of their time. No need to tow a Ford Focus behind this motorhome. It would be easier to park this rig than a full size pich-up truck at any shopping center.
