We have full mesh on our 14x28 Kidney..... A full mesh cover will sag under the weight of the snow, put recover when the snow melts in Spring. A solid cover would continue to sag, and with the weight of Spring rains may fail.
We installed our safety cover in 2004 after 17 years of the tarp and water tube style cover. The safety cover is so much nicer to use. Faster on, faster off, easier to clean, lighter to carry into storage.
The down side is the pool water is much dirtier in the Spring. Rather than crystal clear water with hundreds of nightcrawlers, we had murky green water when opening in the Spring.
This year was much better after I did the following steps. I installed the pump a month before the weather was warm enough to open the pool, and then periodically ran the pump/filter to circulate the water using liquid chlorine to kill off the algae. The water was slightly cloudy but cleared up in a day or so versus a week of filter time (and lots of expensive chemicals that did nothing discernable) in the Springs of 2005, 2006, and 2007.
