One way you get good mileage out of any vehicle is to give it tall gears, so the engine isn't working very hard at highway speeds. I've been in 6 speed cars with overdrive in 5th and 6th, with 4th at 1:1. Then combine it with a tall final drive and the engine is barely turning 2000 rpm at 75. The torque is all up around 4000, so you have to downshift to 3rd to pass or go up a long hill, but your flat road mileage seems OK.
But it has less power where you really want it and the thing won't accelerate up a long hill the way a turbo four will in a Saab, but it gets you there.
Torque is what really makes the world go 'round. I always look at the power to weight ratio and for more torque than horsepower. And where on the curve the torque lives.
