I wonder how the tiptronic transmissions fit into this? I've got a 6-speed automatic with tiptronic in my 2002 V70XC. I rarely use the manual feature, but that car gets very good milage.
I would imagine that the manual vs. automatic theory has too many variables to really have a difinitive answer. My 5-speed 900T definitely gets better milage than my 3-speed auto 900T. But I bet that's because the auto only has three speeds. I have a 1973 Opel GT that has a 4-speed manual and that car could really use another gear. It revs just as high as my 900 with the slush-box at highway speeds. Also the fuel efficiency of a manual is certainly dependant upon the way it is driven. My son, for instance, likes to drive his 5-speed 900T way up in the RPM range. I'm not sure he even knows the car has a fifth gear.
