probably doesn't have the same impact as it might for a Chevy Camaro, but I don't think it hurts any. When you come down to it, there's not much similarity beyond the name and badge for any cars sold today and the older or original models. Think about this: Camaro, Challenger, Mustang, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Jaguar, VW, and more have all done this type of ad to one degree or another. It makes about as much sense as racing versions of a given make being used to sell the street cars. But to some degree it does have an influence.

And since you're in advertising (I was too: 3 agencies, plus lots of market research) you know that lots of things are done for the sake of some imagined marketing benefit and much of it is gratuitous. It's not the real world: it's advertising.
