OT:How do you calculate your rate of return for retirem

Since 2002, I've bought my own stocks for retirement. While intended for retirement, it's separate from an IRA and can be withdrawn when needed without penalty but lacks the IRA tax advantage.
I put money in only a few times a year. How do I calculate return?
Currently, I just do it a primitive way. I assume all the money is deposited July 1. I then guess a return, say 10%, 9%, 8% and do the math.
For example:
2007: 1.08 x deposited = subtotal
2006: 1.08 x 1.08 x deposited = subtotal
2005: 1.08 x 1.08 x 1.08 x deposited = subtotal
2004:....
2003:....
2002:....
add the subtotals and see if the total is about the same as by real total. If not, then recalculate using 1.09 (for 9%) or 1.07 (for 7%).
By this crude method, I get slightly over 8% return. How can I do it better in calculating?
S&P 500 in early 2002 was about 920, 1100 now, 1300 peak this year. 8% would be 1459 so I'm slightly ahead of the market. However, I only have 15 different stocks, which isn't enough. I think 35 is more diversified.
