Most people live where they work. Do it the other way around--work where you live-- and you'll end up working who knows where doing who knows what.
Take this little town in southeastern Oklahoma where I live. Those of us who came here for a job, who live where we work, have found affordable housing and a good place to raise our families. Those who refuse to leave here, who work where they live, are working at the call center or the discount store, scraping by.
If you're bound by love of a place or allegiance to family or something like that, then the getting by is OK. If you want more than to get by, you pretty much have to follow the jobs. My advice: quit reading about housing until you've got some interviews lined up.
