Some more observations on roof-mount

I second the use of roof racks for a few more reasons:
- open the sunroof screen and you can check on the bike (either directly or through the rearview mirror) while in transit
- theft of your bike (or some of its components) from a roof rack is tougher and more "exposed" for the perpetrator
- bikes will be locked to the vehicle (if you use fork-mount trays).
With a recumbent, you'll need a longer wheel tray, I think, and may have to use an upright wheels-on tray vs. fork-mount.
I also second the use of Thule products. The fork-mount bike trays on my 9-3SE are about 15 years old and still fully serviceable and secure. The trays on my 9-5 SW are of the newer variety of Thule Lock-Jaw trays and are VERY sturdy. My heaviest MTB is only about 26 lbs, so getting it on and off is no problem.
Fitting a fairing to the load bars can be tough. I had to make custom extending struts for both roof rack fairings so that the lower edge of the fairing would sit on the top of the windshield instead of on the roof itself.
Good luck - JMJ
