I use mediawiki instead of tikiwiki, mediawiki being what runs wikipedia. Wikis are good for keeping track of information in a less structured way than databases, and keeping track of the changes. We've been using wikis for at least five years now, probably longer.
We have about a dozen staff and a dozen outside subcontractors, and operations at about 60 locations. We use it to keep track of information about sites (alarm/lock combos, owner/maintenance contacts, peculiarities), people and their contact information, keep information about some customers, instructions and policies for staff, links to important internet resources, all sorts of random important information. Needless to say, it's password protected, and accessible only from our network or via VPN. It's about 75% of what you might need to collaborate online, nothing does 100%.
I also work with a nonprofit organization where we have a wiki to put up meeting agendas, contact information, and instructional/institutional knowledge.
