I agree that strings need to be attached, didn't mention them, but said so in response to another's comment. Manufacturing wise, all of the Detroit 3 are quite efficient according to that Harbour Report, but administratively, they probably aren't yet. With 4 years of buyouts to white collar employees, I don't know how they're getting everything done compared to when I was there.
They probably should have gotten rid of brands, but customers loyal to specific divisions, and dealer laws are obstacles. I don't know how much it will cost them to sell or shed brands and who would be willing to buy. I could completely see a case for GM to become just Chevy, an "All-American" mainstream brand that would take over Buick, GMC, and Pontiac products, Cadillac, their luxury brand, and Saturn, which would take on imports by taking over the Opel and Saab products pushing up towards entry lux just like Opel does today.
