Should I dump it or pump $ it? Update III

I picked up my car Thursday night, after having Andrews only do an oil change. The only noise I can hear coming from the belt side of the engine is a distinct whirring/buzzing sound coming from under the valve cover. Is this a sign of a stretched timing chain? I have done three cold starts since then with my hood open to listen for a louder noise/rattle and have heard nothing but the above mentioned noise.
I bought a battery and idler pulley on Friday, and installed the battery that night. Changing the battery made no difference; the lights still dim a bit and the fuel pump gets louder when the engine is revved. I noticed that my old battery is a Varta, I am guessing it’s the original battery since you can’t currently buy Varta batteries in the U.S., but could a battery last seven years in a cold climate?
I have yet to take the belt off and give the pulley a spin; it’s been in the teens here all weekend.
So, what noises should I be looking for that would indicate a failing alternator and idler pulley? Why do my lights continue to dim and fuel pump get louder when the engine is revved, considering that the battery is new and the alternator is putting out 14.4v? Is the noise coming from my timing chain abnormal?
p.s. I realized on my 1 hour drive home from Andrews that I do like my car and missed it the few days it was in the shop. I intend to keep it if it doesn’t turn out to be a complete money pit.
