Sounds like the setup you have is this: The wall switch is actually a wireless transmitter. It transmits a signal to a receiver mounted either in the canopy of the fan or inside the fan assembly itself. The problem would be with the receiver at the fan. The receiver is actually what controls the fan speed and light output (not the switch directly). May have took some type of hit or surge. Only way to rectify this would be to replace the receiver. Assuming you have the receiver in the canopy (as opposed to built into the fan) it's easy to fix. You probably won't be able to find just the receiver, you would have to buy a complete kit. They sell them at any home improvement store and if your mechanically inclined, relatively easy to install/replace.

You can easily confirm if this is what you have by first turning off the power to the circuit, pull the wall switch out of the wall and, take a look at the wiring. Ignoring the green or bare copper wire (the ground), if the switch only has two wires (probably both black or black/blue) that are spliced to your house wiring, the above setup is more than likely what you have. If you pull out the switch and there are three wires (black/red/blue more likely, and possibly a ground) the switch is hardwired to the fan. The problem is with your switch, and again, just replace the switch. Just make sure you follow the instructions so nobody gets hurt!
