The depreciation factor primarily affects the original owner, so if you buy used, that isn't really an argument. How long can you actually drive the car, (years or miles) before you have to "invest" in repairs?? If you buy a Japanese appliance car that runs for 10 years with no maintenance, then get rid of it, that car is more affordable than buying a SAAB and fixing it when it needs repair. I bought a Honda Accord in 1983, used (one year old car with 33k for $3515) I traded it in on a 1987 Chrysler K car, 5 years later. The dealership was happy to give me 5K for the Accord. Which was more than I paid for it, even though it had 100K miles on it and it needed the following: new rack and pinion, new rear seat stiching due to sun fade, and some body repair for corrosion rust-through. I was very disenchanted with the Accord, and to this day it is one of only 3 Asian cars I have ever owned. (the others being a Datsun 1600, and a Toyota Celica)
The K car did it's 100,000 and 5 years, with $00.00 expended on repairs, and regular valvoline oil changes. This was a time in my life when the nearest SAAB dealership was more than 250 miles away. The point I'm trying to make is that the SAAB is better engineered than most of it's rivals, and therefore worth the investment to keep it and fix it.

Let the Original owner eat the depreciation. Buy Smart.
