My buddies will be driving the Audi 90- team Unintended Acceleration (think back a few years to a 60-minutes episode where people claimed their Audi suddenly accelerated, it was later discovered that the people had hit the resume button on the cruise control). I worked on the car, but my wife is due within a few days of the event, so I will not be there.
The October event in Houston had 2 Saabs- Team Slaab. All of the guys had t-shirts with unpronounceable Swedish names written across their backs. One car did not last long, while the other made it through with a few penalties. Apparently on Saturday night Team Slaab helped a few other teams get running again, so they won an award for their help.
To correct an earlier statement- its not the winning team that gets crushed, but the team chosen by the fellow races- usually the team that everyone thinks cheated the most (aka The Peoples Curse Award)on cost (can't spend more than $500 on the car, excluding safety gear). The winning team gets something like $1,000, paid out in nickles. It takes about 8 guys to carry that kind of coin.
During the race there are a bunch of penalties ranging from placing your car in impound for half and hour, to two guys taking off their shirts and hugging for 5-minutes (they ran into each other on the track), to getting metal shavings poured in your oil (how long can a car run with metal shavings-about 6 laps), to removing the starter for an old Lexus (hint-the starter is located under the intake manifold between the cylinder banks, the Lexus estimated removal time is 6-hours, our team removed it in around 38 minutes).
