The monitor makes a big difference and so does how it is positioned. Then factor in ambient light.
One rule of thumb for screen intensive work, like video editing, is to have the top of the monitor at or slightly below your seated eye level. This makes you look down a bit, regardless of the size on the screen. Most of the video editing guys I work with have set ups like that.
I'm on a MacBook Pro all day with the computer on my desk. I am looking downward at the screen which is usually at or close to full bright, but I dim it a bit if I turn down the room lights. I think the balance of ambient to screen brightness makes a difference, but this does depend on the monitor/screen you're using.
If you use glasses you may need some designed for computer use. I have friends who switched to those and have been very happy. As for eye drops, some people just seem to need them.
There are other factors, too. Working on a computer means you're constantly focusing at 18 to 24 inches. This is not great for the muscles that control the shape of your eye and how it focuses (accommodation spasm is one term for this). I've found getting in the habit of looking around the room, or especially outside, periodically makes my eyes less tired.
Still, a long day editing video or in Photoshop/InDesign can be rough of the eyeballs. Occupational hazard for many these days.
