The first question to ask is if the current cabinet configuration meets your needs for storage and layout. If it does, and the cabinet boxes are in good shape, I'd go for the refacing. You vintage boxes are more than likely solid wood or plywood vs. particle board that you'll get in all but $$$ modern cabinets. Put the $$ you save into a good solid surface counter, which is the part that takes the most abuse. Also make sure thy use quality hardware in terms of hinges and drawer glides.
