I have used summer-only tires for the past 5.5 years and while I like the handling I don't like them wearing out in 2.5 summers, at $500-600/set. I don't use the car on a track, so having the ultimate sticky tire isn't important. I don't want some hard-compound tires that last 60K miles but something in between a summer tire and my winter Nokians. Plus, here in New Hampshire we can get light snow in April and October and I know from experience that summer tires don't do well in it.
I drive hard sometimes (I have a 9K with an Aero suspension and SAS sway bars) and on my favorite back roads I've been known to drive at speeds that would have bad results for my license. I think a V-rated all-season will give me the latitude at the each end of the seasons.
Also, I have 3 Saabs to keep tires on, so a longer-wearing tire than summer-only shoes spreads out the costs. My daughter's will likely need new Nokian WRs tires this November and I try to keep tire costs to 1 or 2 sets per year.
