I sold my SAAB recently through Saabnet and since the buyer was in a different state, he drove the car back to his home. I took the advice in this forum related to what to do with the plates and registration and agreed to let him drive the car with my plates and registration with the understanding that he would mail them back to me immediately when he got home. After 1 week, I had still not heard back from him nor had I received the plates/reg in the mail. I called him and he said he would be mailing them back in the next few days. This was becoming an issue because not only was I taking a risk with my plates/reg on his car but I was not able to cancel my auto insurance because I had not returned the plates to the DMV and they would not cancel my policy until I had returned the plates. After waiting another few days with no plates/reg I called him and emailed him several times without hearing back. Finally, two weeks after buying the car, he called me and said he wants to back out of the deal and would be returning the car! When he bought the car, he signed a bill of sale stating he was buying the car "as is" (it had over 100,000 miles on it) and I had given him full disclosure on everything that had happened with the car and had given him all the maintenance and repair records. I told him that the deal was final, that I did not mislead him and that I have no idea what he could have done to the car in the two weeks he had it. To tell me there were issues with the car 2 weeks after I sold it to him AND after I had been trying to follow up with him to no avail is not acceptable.
What I did once this happened was to report the plates lost with the local police department, brought that form to the DMV and they were able to cancel my registration and give me the correct info so I could cancel my insurance.
From what I am reading on the web, it sounds like this guy does not have a case - he bought the car as is and signed the bill of sale. I did not mislead him in any way - I think it's buyer's remorse. We had agreed on a price that was substantially lower than what I was asking because the ongoing monthly cost of parking and insurance to me wasn't worth it.
He said he would be contacting his lawyer... while I don't think I should be concerned, has anyone experienced something like this?
Thanks in advance for any advice....
