If it was my wife's 9-5 wagon (which she drives 95%) I might go with something Japanese, as she just needs reliable, comfortable and good in snow and not likely to have onerous repair costs. The Mazda CX7 or CX9 come to mind, as does the new Toyota Venza.
To replace my '96 9K (standard engine, 5 spd, Aero chassis w/SAS sway bars) I'd want something with at least that level of handling and performance. BMW's are ridiculously overpriced and unless it's an M-model they don't have the power, and cost too much to own, so they are not a likely candidate.
Possibly an Audi A4, despite the fact they don't seem to be good DIY cars. I like the A4 wagon a lot. Even the A3 could do the job. And it's not hard to tweak the performance in either.
I'd actually consider (gasp!) a Japanese car, possibly an Infiniti or an Altima. Have rented the Altima a few times and with a chip and some suspension tweaks would actually be OK. They lack character, but could be a good car.
For my kid (a college junior), when her '95 9K goes away the replacement will be on her dime. I'll encourage her to get something Japanese as it will fit her budget better. Being very green, she's leaning toward a hybrid.
I think about this a lot, as I think we may not have new Saabs available a whole lot longer, at least in the States. But I suspect I'll keep buying used ones for my daily ride. But I plan to keep my 9K for 3-4 more years.
