News: GM and Chrysler must quit NASCAR series

I was never a big NASCAR fan, to me its professional wrestling on wheels, but this is troubling.
Just over the intertubes is the report that the Auto Task Force (federal government board of non-car guys) has decreed that GM and Chrysler must drop out of the NASCAR racing series at the end of 2009.
Interestingly, they cite the NASCAR rules themselves, which regulate every detail of the race car to be identical to the next car, except for the body and brand, as the evidence that racing budget is not needed to support future passenger car development. NASCAR hoisted on its own rule book petard. Hyundai is hoped to replace GM. The more things Change, the more they get insane.
Not sure if its a April Fools joke, but Wesley Mouch would be proud if it isn't.
