Saab used to always be a more practical alternative to cars from BMW, MB, Audi. They gave you comparible handling/feel/quality, but with the all weather compromise of FWD verses the dry road handling benfits of RWD or the complexity and weight of AWD. And of course the unusual choice having hatchbacks on cars in the sport sedan segment was their claim to fame. The current 9-3 & 9-5 aren't too far from the Saabs' core values. They are relatively simple, economical, safe, fun to drive etc. and give me much of what I expect in a Saab. Where they've lost their way is that instead of being a thinking persons alternative to the German cars they've attempted to go head to head (offering AWD, V6's, sport utes, etc). That's no small task, and Saab simply doesn't have the resources to do it successfully (few do). I think the reason they haven't done well under GM is that they've not done a good job of communicating what they were about. The car companies that are doing well in this economy (Subaru, Honda, MiniCooper) are the ones who don't follow the trends, who have a clear, distinct message/mission, and communicate it well. Saab hasn't strayed so far away that they couldn't find their way back "home" but it would take someone with the vision and resolve to make it happen.
