Well I went to Costco and for $1,999 and no state sales tax on hearing instruments in California I got the "open fit" Rexton hearing aids. They say they're made by Siemans and would cost $3-4k elsewhere. 4 year warranty, 2 or 3 years loss protection and a 90 day money back period. If you don't like 'em for any reason you can receive a full refund for up to 90 days, instead of the normal 30 day period under California law.

So far absolutely no down side. Comfortable all day and totally undetectable until I pull one out of my ear and show someone.

I can wear them with my motorcycle helmet no problem. I do get a bit of wind ruffling in our Z3 convertible, but otherwise not a screech or unwanted sound comes through. Many little sounds, the rustling of clothes and such comes through and my own voice sounds a skosh metallic, but I quickly got used to this and I'm told it's quite normal.

And yes improved hearing, and the confidence to know that if I don't hear it it's not me. Lower volume on the TV and I speak more softly.

So I'm sitting in front of one of my best customers, a psychologist, and I pull mine out to show him my new toys and he pulls out his and I'm surprised he has them as I absolutely couldn't see them and hadn't noticed them. Then he tells me he was actually writing on some of his psychological reports client speaks softly or mumbles and his wife kept asking him why he left the radio on so loud in the car....

So I'm very glad I've done it now instead of waiting. The coping mechanisms for poor hearing are very sneaky and subtle and you don't realize what your missing. Get yourself tested.

BTW I'm 56....
