If you have not bought lenses, go with Nikon. If you have recent SLR lenses, go with whatever brand you currently have. The lenses will cost you more than the camera in the end.
Although Canon is probably ahead on the consumer friendly front, My Nikon d70 is easy to turnover to the untrained user on automatic. Also, last summer I dropped my d70 15 feet onto a rock jetty. I was horrified and went down to pick up the pieces. I picked up the the camera and the only missing piece was the lcd cover which I found and popped back on. I turned on the camera and everything seemed to work. Back home, all pix intact. The pop-up flash will not fire (a way too expensive $200 fix) but everything else seems to work fine. There is a troubling rattle in the lens but that does not seem to impact the camera or the quality of the pictures.
Whatever digital SLR you get, make sure that it has dust removal technology for the CCD since every time I change lens, I have to blow dust off the CCD. I think the d60 and maybe even the d40 have this technology.
