Best answer I've heard for changing the oil in the fall, is the used oil can become acidic. Sitting in the engine all winter will etch stuff. As a result I always change the oil afer the last mowing and run it out of gas after the oil change. Also we have a habit of checking the oil before starting the engine for each mowing. The old 8 HP Snapper we used to mow a couple acres got pretty tired after 13 years, and required topping off the oil before each mowing.
