Brakes and Camber Posted by Bill Homer [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Saabs rolling fast at NH Motor Speedway, Noel, Sun, 26 Jul 2009 18:03:45 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Noel you are right that any "car guy" needs to do this at least once. Years ago I went to a two-day SCCoA training/autocross event with my C900S (no turbo) at Blackhawk Farms, a local track near the Illinois/Wisconsin border. After the first run of several laps, I came back into the pits with my front brakes literally/visibly smoking - clouds of stinky smoke. My instructor said that this was completely normal for a first-time driver on the track. As he predicted, it got much better with more practice, particulalry on the second day - you learn to drive smoother, brake later into turns, set up your lines so less braking is required, etc. Slowing down is the enemy of going fast! You might be surprised at how good your standard brakes are if you do this again - although track-specific pads are probably better for track use (but don't be surprised at the lack of bite on your first stop on the street).
You may not like the effects of negative camber on tire wear for a daily driver. My understanding is that the Alfa 164 (similar chassis to a 9000) is set up this way, but I'm not 100% certain on this.
