This is just an idea - no experience with it, though. I'd think something like the Koni adjustables that folks on the C900 like would be something that might work. We have a 1989 300TE, and it has always been my impression the reason the MB has the pneumatic shocks is to handle the variable load between single drive and the full 7 passenger load.
Maybe use the Konis to find a happy medium setting for the single to 4 passengers, and supplement the Konis with some spring airbags for heavy duty use. One of the things that attracted me to my particular 300TE was that the previous owner had replaced the shocks a few thousand miles before he sold it to me. I saw the bill for it in the paperwork I got - $1800 is a pretty good price for that job.
Just random musings, but seems like it mike work.
