there are times when having the mirror switches on the door is a good thing... like when shifting the AT into gear and needing to get that window down... or up...
I prefer the switches in the center, mostly because of the wiring issues (In older cars, 3-4 wires PER WINDOW had to go into the door for that switch pack, a total waste of copper, IMO.). But also because it then makes it easy to ask the co-driver to open/close a window other than their own...
But today, where the switch pack is just another device on the bus making requests of the car (e.g Saab 9-3 SporSedan/SportKombi), the wiring argument is out the window, since all switches need just 3 wires...
